Clothing brand Vollebak has used an ink derived from spirulina algae to dye a T-shirt black as a demonstration of how fashion could move away from carbon-based pigments. The ink was developed by Living Ink and is carbon negative every kilogram produced removes 4.16 kilograms of CO2 from the atmosphere, according to Dezeen which has the story here

Innovation foundation Nesta Challenges has launched a £1.8 million fund to tackle the problem of plastic pollution in sub-Saharan Africa, Design Week reports. The fund is part of Nesta’s Afri-Plastics Challenge which also has funds for creating solutions to reduce or eliminate plastic usage and accelerating the growth of innovations. A total of £1.8 million is on offer, with 30 semi-finalists to be awarded £5,000 each to develop their concepts ahead of a judging panel hosted in June 2022 to determine further awards. Radicle Civics is a new downloadable report from Indy Johar’s DarkMatter Labs and design thinking studio Shift which proposes “the possibilities of new means of organising [our societies] fit for a newly networked, interdependent world, in which we more equitably share responsibility”. “We’re seeking ambitious infrastructural change, questioning established structures and embracing emerging alternatives, that allow those individuals, collectives and communities to participate in creating and developing new visions for society,” the authors say.
