Where Waste Meets Design “is an innovative, design-led exhibition, which uses creative processes to challenge how we think about waste”. The ArtHouse Jersey show is part of its Skipton Big Ideas series and will run until 17 July. A variety of makers “will be working live in situ to explore the hidden potential of our rubbish pile and transform these broken or discarded things into objects, new materials, works of art and experiences”. What is claimed to be Europe’s most powerful electric vehicle charging hub has opened in Oxford. Built by Pivot Power, part of EDF Renewables, alongside Oxford City Council, it has capacity to charge 400 vehicles and is entirely powered by renewable sources. The hub is part of Energy Superhub Oxford, which is being positioned as a model for the future decarbonisation of cities. More here

The world’s first large-scale ‘sand battery’ has gone online in Finland. The 4×7 metre steel container contains hundreds of tonnes of sand which can be heated to a temperature of 500-600 degrees Celsius. The sand is heated with renewable electricity and stored for use in the local district heating system. More here

In common with much of the design world, everyone at URGE was shocked and saddened to learn that Dezeen founder Marcus Fairs had passed away. Marcus was an encouraging and enthusiastic supporter of URGE and we would all like to extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
