Wagamama has launched new packaging, “which seeks to reduce the company’s use of virgin plastic by 330 tonnes each year,” according to Design Week. The new packaging was created by design studio Morrama and is made from 70%+ recycled PET, with “additional virgin plastic required for structural reasons”. The packaging also swaps Wagamama’s familiar dark grey to lighter shades in order to aid recycling.. Story here

In 2019 the US Business Roundtable made what many hoped was a landmark commitment to “protect the environment by embracing sustainable practices across our businesses”. CEOs from the likes of Pepsi, Walmart and Google signed up to its “Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation” which was trumpeted as a significant shift to responsible capitalism. Three years on, The Guardian reports that, despite its promises, the group has actually lobbied to undermine efforts to address Climate Change in the US. Full story here

New York-based The World Around, a group of leading designers and thinkers, has launched applications to its inaugural Young Climate Prize. The prize will “provide visibility, support and mentorship for 25 of the world’s most talented and passionate climate designers under the age of 25. We are looking for young people who are working on their own self-started projects that address, draw attention to or mitigate climate change in their community”. The final 25 will each be mentored by one The World Around’s Design Champions, who include Paola Antonelli, Elizabeth Diller and Alice Rawsthorn. The deadline for applications is October 31. Toronto’s 2023 DesignTO Festival is looking for submissions for Trash Talk, its Symposium which “invites designers and thinkers to explore design responses to the problem of waste management. How do we design for carbon neutrality, or even carbon negativity? How are designers responsible for the environmental impact of their designs? How can we transform our relationship with waste and begin to see it as a valuable resource?” The deadline for submissions is September 23. The Festival runs from January 20-29, online and in-person.
