“Plastic recycling does not work and will never work”: In the Atlantic, academic and president of Beyond Plastics, Judith Enck, and founder of the Last Beach Cleanup Jan Dell argue that, “the plastics industry has waged a decades-long campaign to perpetuate the myth that the material is recyclable. This campaign is reminiscent of the tobacco industry’s efforts to convince smokers that filtered cigarettes are healthier than unfiltered cigarettes.” Due to plastics’ complex nature, the wastefulness of the recycling process and the economics of the industry, they argue that plastics recycling, in the US at least, is impractical and instead acts as a means for the plastics industry to hoodwink the public. A new ‘comic’ published by leadership consultancy and research group 360 Dialogues outlines some of the problems with seeing the Circular Economy as a silver bullet to solve the Climate Crisis. “The comic is a condensation of key ideas present in the different articles.
