In an attempt to reduce methane emissions from cows, RCA-backed UK start-up Zelp has developed a wearable device which oxidises the methane present in cattle exhalations (apparently 95% of methane emissions from cows come from their mouth and nostrils). The start-up says it hopes to begin mass producing the devices next year and has received the backing of US agri giant Cargill which plans to start offering the devices to European dairy farmers from 2022. Marine scientists at the University of Hong Kong's School of Biological Sciences are using 3D-printed clay tiles to help restore Hong Kong's fragile seabeds. The tiles were placed on the sea floor last summer to create an artificial ‘coral reef’ which is already attracting sea life. Story here

Ecosurety, in in collaboration with Mars, Mondelēz International, Nestlé, Pepsico and Unilever, has launched the Flexible Plastic Fund, “a new collaborative fund giving value to flexible plastics so they are properly recycled”. Participating supermarkets, such as Sainsbury’s, will now house collection points for flexible plastics - used in bags, sachets, wrapping and films, that has not usually been accepted by household recycling schemes.
