The Architects Declare 2021 Conference will take place virtually on 20-21 April with the theme Ideas into Action. Across two afternoons, the event “will focus on ideas that go beyond conventional sustainability and on how to dramatically transform the way we design and practice as companies”. Speakers include Roman Krznaric on how to be a good ancestor, Dr Gabrielle Walker on carbon targets in the build-up to COP26, Farhana Yamin on the vital connection between construction and climate justice, and Jojo Mehta on the building momentum for a law of ecocide. In 2019, Waitrose pledged to use the money generated by the 5p levy on plastic bags to launch a £1m grant fund to cut plastic pollution in the UK. The supermarket asked Hubbub to manage the fund and it has now issued a report on the impact of the five projects which received grants under the scheme. The projects were: Safegear, which uses beacons to track and aid recovery of lost fishing gear; a community bio-recycling project; Mussel Power, an idea to use mussels to filter out micro plastics; Enviromenstrual, which seeks to create more sustainable period products; and Message in a Bottle, a plan to install water refill stations at all major youth hostels. Diageo has claimed that a pilot project has produced the lowest carbon footprint glass bottles ever made for a Scotch whisky brand. The drinks giant worked with glass manufacturer Encirc and research and technology body Glass Futures, using waste-based biofuel-powered furnaces to “reduce the carbon footprint of the bottle-making process by up to 90%”. A new YouGov survey has found that over half of UK business travellers will fly less often when pandemic-related travel restrictions are lifted. Also, reports City AM, 62 per cent of UK business travellers think jet fuels’ tax-free status should be ended, while over 50 per cent said that governments should legislate for airlines to decarbonise their operations.
